The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful supercomputing infrastructures in Europe and makes it available to researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), in Germany, and throughout Europe. The division High-Performance-Computing Systems (HPS) at JSC is responsible for the integration and operation of different supercomputing and high-performance storage resources in the facility. With the supercomputers JUWELS and JURECA and the storage cluster JUST, HPS is operating some of the largest supercomputing systems using cutting-edge hardware and software technologies. We design our systems in cooperation with major industrial partners.

We are offering a position as

System Engineer for Supercomputing in the area of HPC, Cloud, or Storage

Your Job:

You will be working within the division on the design, implementation, and maintenance of system configurations, software tools, and services for our supercomputers, cloud infrastructure, and storage components.

Depending on qualification and interests you will be responsible for

  • Contributing to deployment and operation of new systems and their integration with external infrastructures with a focus on either HPC, cloud, or storage systems (we intend to fill openings in each focus area)
  • Performing benchmarking and system tuning
  • Performing research on – and developing tools for – system operation and monitoring of supercomputers
  • Problem analysis and resolution including third-level user support
  • Contribution to infrastructure-oriented research projects in cooperation with scientists in the field of neuroscience, earth systems modelling, and emerging computing technologies (in particular quantum computing)
  • Evaluation of new hardware and software technologies
  • Cooperation with hardware and software vendors

Your Profile:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree (or comparable) from a university with internationally accepted quality standards in informatics, mathematics, or a related subject
  • Knowledge of Linux in the areas of installation and administration
  • Knowledge of Python and script languages (Bash, etc.); ideally knowledge of further relevant programming languages (C / C++ / Go)
  • Previous experience with high-performance computing, cloud or storage technologies is considered a plus but is not a prerequisite
  • Willingness to contribute with talks to international conferences and participate in courses and tutorials
  • Good command of English and preferably good knowledge of German
  • Structured and systematic working style as well as ability to work cooperatively in teams
