Research Software/Ontology Engineer (m/f/d)

to work in the Team Research Data Services as of May 2020.

The position is initially limited to three years with envisioned extension. The regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The position is only suitable for part-time work to a limited extent. The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

Your challenge

The position is part of the third-party funded project DiASPora (Digital Approaches for the Synthesis of Poorly Accessible Biodiversity Information). The project will establish an approach for synthesizing information for bacterial species by applying state-of-the-art data science methodology. Data will be transformed into a machine readable and processable format and will be used to establish a knowledge graph to generate innovative search options for the discovery of hidden data relationships. 

Your tasks will focus on

  • Semantification of prokaryotic data: Data has to be standardized and transformed into a machine-readable and -processable format following the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) and Linked Data (LD) principles. This will include the use of semantic formalisms such as the Resource Description Framework (RDF), ontologies and R2RML mappings
  • Establishing a machine-readable knowledge graph: This task will include the semantic integration of data, metadata and schemes. An agile, iterative and community-driven method for ontology development by and with all stakeholders needs to be developed. This will include the evaluation of the NCBI Taxon ontology and the representation of quality criteria including classification schemes for the microbiological sector
  • Improving the graphical and programmatic access to microbiological data

Your qualities

Your competence area should be squarely rooted in software/ontology engineering or related fields. You should be able to think creatively, grasp new knowledge quickly, be able to design and develop innovative software systems and be interested in mastering complex challenges.

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master or comparable) in a relevant field such as Computer Science or Information Science
  • Excellent proficiency in Semantic Technologies, Ontology Engineering and Knowledge Graphs
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages (esp. Java, JavaScript, Python, PHP) and modern software engineering methodologies (esp. Agile methods, DevOps)
  • Experience in data mining, machine learning, algorithms, pattern recognition, information retrieval and ontologies (Protégé) as well as analysis tools
  • Experience in the development and use of web services (REST, SOAP)
  • A high degree of self-organisation and working independently
  • Participation in the preparation of applications for third-party funding
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English; proficiency in German is a plus


  • Knowledge on microbiological data or life science data
  • Knowledge of Research Data Management
  • Experience in MediaWiki and Semantic MediaWiki development 
  • Experience working in collaborative projects and project management skills
