About the Position

We’re looking for an experienced manager with a proven track record of planning, developing, and deploying large, complex web applications. You’ll manage a team of front-end and back-end developers working in an Agile development process on a two-week sprint cycle.

You’ll work with UX/UI designers, marketing specialists, and other departments to understand and own the team’s assigned projects. You’ll identify and recommend technical opportunities to add to the development backlog.

We’re a small team, but we know you’ll be blown away when you see the types of projects we’re working on and the sophistication in the codebase on which we’re developing these projects. We have a philosophy of in-house expertise rather than heavy reliance on “off the shelf” frameworks and dependencies.

About You

You have 10+ years of experience building large applications while adhering to requirements and meeting deadlines. You recognize the importance of an organized workflow. You’re a strong programmer who is capable of rolling up your sleeves and writing object-oriented code, but you know that you don’t have to do that when you successfully lead others during the development process. You’re comfortable managing web servers and understand why uptime is so important. You’re a long-term thinker who recognizes that shortcuts are often not in the best interest of the company. You’re a strong communicator who enjoys defending your solutions to a team that is passionate about clean, well-structured, object-oriented code. You take ownership of the projects assigned to you. You like to make things that you can be proud of.

What You’ll Do

You’ll lead a talented team of developers and be responsible for the overall output of the department. This includes:

  • Translate requirements into a fully-formed plan, including resource allocations, scopes, and timelines.
  • Lead sprint planning meetings to ensure that the team understands their objectives and has committed to completing their work on an agreed-upon timeline.
  • Monitor progress throughout the sprint to keep the team aware of their progress and their hurdles.
  • Encourage healthy communication among developers.
  • Represent the web development team in meetings with other departments.
  • Add tickets to the development backlog. Maintain that backlog by helping to keep it organized, prioritized, and pruned.
  • Identify areas of the project management, development, and release deployment processes that can be made more efficient and less error-prone. Implement those improvements.
  • Maintain our web servers in all environments from development to production.
  • Regularly monitor the developers’ code to ensure they are producing object-oriented code that lives up to the company high quality expectations.
  • Study the business and its products so you can be confident that the developers’ work will serve us well.
  • Review the performance of existing staff and help them address their weaknesses.
  • Improve the department by finding, screening, interviewing, and hiring talented developers.
